Jean-Claude Juncker, former president of the European Commission, received the title Doctor Honoris Causa from the Academy of Economic Studies (ASE) on Thursday, April 6, in a ceremony that took place in the presence of president Klaus Iohannis, reports Agerpres.
The head of state evoked some significant moments from the rich political experience of the former president of the European Commission, showing that he was a witness to the fall of the Berlin Wall, architect of the Maastricht Treaty from 1992, president of the Eurogroup for 8 years and that he played an important role in the reunification of the European continent.
"At a time when Europe was redefining itself after the fall of the communist regimes, Jean-Claude Juncker was a true champion of the European cause, bringing together large and small states, new or old, from the East or the West, to work together for development and to overcome the divisions of the past. The Juncker Plan had a key role in increasing and strengthening the competitiveness of the European economy. Much of the needed economic resilience in recent years also originates from the vision promoted by the Investment Plan for the European Union." Klaus Iohannis said.
He also stated that Jean-Claude Juncker's mandate at the head of the European Commission was one of reference, despite the considerable challenges the Union faced, from managing the consequences of the economic and financial crisis, to the migrant crisis or at the time of Brexit in 2016.
President Klaus Iohannis also spoke about the dramatic developments triggered by the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, showing that "we have today in Europe this united and solidary response to an unprecedented attack on our values, on the rules and principles of international law". He showed that Romania strongly supports Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, states that have become candidates for joining the EU.
