The first electronic ID cards will be issued in Cluj county in a week's time, and in the next two months, this type of document will be available throughout the country, through the public community services of the public registry of persons, the Ministry of Interior announced.
The electronic ID card will have a standard size, similar to bank cards.
In printed format it will contain name, surname, nationality, date of birth, gender, a photograph and Personal Identification Number, as well as a handwritten signature. In electronic format there will also be other information, such as parents' surnames, domicile, two fingerprints of the holder and digital certificates for authentication or electronic signature.
According to the Ministry of Interior, the electronic ID card will contain advanced security features to protect against forgery and identity theft.
From the beginning of June, parents will be able to apply for this document for children under the age of 14.
This means that in countries where the e-ID card is accepted, it can be used as a travel document instead of a passport.
The electronic ID card is not compulsory. Those who do not want it can apply for simple ID cards without a microchip from May 20.
