The EU committee is concerned about the recent events in Romania, especially by the actions that seem to reduce the effective power of several independent institutions like the CC, a press release issued by the Committee says.
The state, the balance and the independence of the judicial system are key elements of the EU democracy and indispensable to a mutual trust in the EU, the press release says.
The government’s policies and its actions ”must respect these values and principles”, according to the press release.
The committee has already begun to scrutinize the judicial reform and the anticorruption measures in the context of the Certification and Cooperation Mechanism.
At present, the Committee is finishing a report in which five years worth of work to solve these problems in Romania have been synthesized.
The recent changes might hinder the progress made over the years, the Committee warned.
The President of the EU committee talked to the vice president yesterday and expressed the concerns of the Committee.
The vice president will go to Brussels next Thursday to talk about these matters with Barroso, the Committee said.
