The European Union's € 1.8 trillion budget was approved after Hungary and Poland dropped their veto.
The announcement comes in the context of the European leaders' summit in Brussels. European Council President Charles Michel confirmed the agreement on Twitter: "Now we can start implementing it and rebuilding our economies," Michel said.
Euronews reports that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the announcement, saying in a message on the same platform: "Europe is moving forward." Hungary and Poland blocked the adoption of the EU budget for the next seven years in November due to rule of law conditions under which EU funds would be reduced to Member States that are thought to violate key European values.
