The Emergency Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases and Transplantation in Targu Mures wants to reduce the risk of nosocomial infections. The operating theatres and the ICU department will be modernised and the rest of the hospital will be equipped with specific equipment. The project, which is currently underway, is due to be completed by the end of the year and a total of more than 50 pieces of equipment will be purchased. Some of them have already arrived and are used in the medical act, the project manager, Septimiu Voidazan, told Radio Romania Targu Mures.
Septimiu Voidazan: "This equipment is used for air disinfection. We have an automatic nebulization system, a machine for chemical and thermal disinfection in human presence, devices for /.../ hand disinfection, devices for rapid self-monitoring tests, automatic equipment for antibiotic sensitivity testing, automatic machines for washing and disinfecting surfaces, a system for neutralizing contaminated materials. We obtained cleaning and surface disinfection materials. These are first stage equipment and they have already been purchased, we already have them at the hospital and we are already using them."
The next step is to build the infrastructure of the two operating theatres (for adults and for children) and the two ICU wards through their architectural reconfiguration. According to the Mures Public Health Directorate, last year the Heart Institute reported 63 healthcare-associated infections, representing 1% of the total number of patients.
