The Minister of Economy, Stefan Radu Oprea, declared that the Romanian authorities are willing to make every effort and find the best solution so that the "Damen" company does not give up its association with the Romanian state. The Dutch naval company announced that it has decided to give up the shipyard in Mangalia, one of the largest in Europe, due to the entry into force of a law that prevents it from exercising operational control at Mangalia. The competent minister considers that the reason is not well founded.
Minister of the Economy - Stefan Radu Oprea: I personally do not understand this decision, because I have already informed them that we are in this working group, that we have informed and are in contact with both the European Commission and the OECD in order to be able to reintroduce this exception. I think it is a unique case in Romania. We are still making efforts. We are in dialogue. I believe that things, when we are at the discussion table, can evolve well both for "Damen" and for the shareholders, i.e. for the citizens of Romania whom we represent and, at the same time, for those who work at the shipyard.
In a press release, the "Damen" company states that following an already difficult collaboration and now facing the fact that it no longer has operational control in the construction site in Mangalia, it faces not only a breach of contract, but also with the violation of the relationship of trust on the part of the Romanian state.
