RADIO ROMANIA NEWS - The draft law on urban mobility awaits, next week, the decision-making vote of the deputies, after receiving a favorable report in the specialized parliamentary committee. The document provides for measures to reduce the speed of travel in cities to calm urban traffic, but also to stimulate the use of public or non-motorized means of transport.
With details Iulia Gherman: "According to the draft law, from January 1, 2026 for all municipalities it becomes mandatory to apply the urban mobility plan as a territorial strategic planning tool. The government, initiator of the new regulations, emphasizes in the text of the draft that this plan aims to, among others, the promotion of alternative means of transport to reduce environmental pollution, the redistribution of the way streets are used through a fair division of the traffic space between individual motorized transport, public transport and cycling, for example, or the development of pedestrian areas. Other objectives considered by the urban mobility plan aim to reduce the number of vehicles per thousand inhabitants and the parking spaces and the reduction of the distance and duration of trips, through a development oriented towards public transport. Measures are provided to stimulate the renewal of the non-polluting car fleet intended for public transport, urban and low-emission areas are being organized where access will be tolled or only to non-polluting vehicles."
