The draft law on pre-university education was adopted in the specialized committee of the Chamber of Deputies. Our editor, Catalin Purcaru, recalls some of the amendments voted by the parliamentarians.
Catalin Purcaru: For 50% of the available spots, high schools will be able to organize an admission contest in the 9th grade for certain specializations. In the version proposed by the ministry, a threshold of 60 percent was foreseen. The first students who would take this exam will be those entering the 5th grade in the 2023-2024 school year, if the drafts of the new education laws pass the Parliament by autumn. Students with disabilities and those of Roma ethnicity will have the opportunity to occupy up to 10% of the places, depending on the results obtained at the National Assessment. Regarding the Baccalaureate Exam, the Ministry's version was kept, with the support of the language skills evaluation test in two languages of international circulation. According to another adopted amendment, teachers who do not live in the locality where they have their post will benefit from the transport settlement from the budget of the Ministry of Education. The debates in the specialized commission will be resumed this morning on the amendments submitted to the draft law on higher education.
