The competitions have suffered a two-day delay, due to adverse weather conditions. Consequently, the first round will begin on Monday afternoon at 3 p.m.
Prior to the technical meeting on Sunday evening, the women’s finals start-up list consisted of thirty players, including six grandmasters and three international masters.
Last year’s medalists – champion Cristina Foişor, vice-champion Irina Bulmagă and bronze medalist Corina Peptan – will also be playing.
Compared to last year’s competition, it is notable that grandmaster Luminiţa Cosma, member of the Romanian Olympic team, will also participate.
On Sunday evening, 139 players were enrolled for the men’s finals, but this number may decrease following weather warnings.
There are nine grandmasters and eleven international masters, including last year’s medalists: the official champion Constantin Lupulescu, who will attempt to win the national title for the third consecutive year, vice-champion Lucian Miron and bronze medalist Mircea Pârligras, who, in the meantime, has become the holder of the best ELO coefficient among Romanian players.
We are expected to witness passionate matches, especially if we think back on last year’s edition, when the championship title was decided in the last round, in which no less than five players finished the competition on first place, with an equal number of points, and the title was eventually awarded following the enforcement of tie-break criteria.
Like last year, the women’s finals will also be held at the Casa cu Tei guest house, and the men’s finals, at the Casino Hotel.
In the sports sections of the following days, we’ll return with information on the national chess finals for senior women and men from Sărata Monteoru.
