The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) will discuss on Thursday, at the request of the Romanian delegation, the situation of national minorities in Ukraine that will no longer have the right to study in their Mother Tongue.
PACE voted, today, in the opening of the plenary session in Strasbourg, the introduction on the Agenda of an urgent debate on the "new Ukrainian Law on Education: a major impediment to the teaching of national minorities’ mother tongues”.
The request was made by the Romanian delegation.
This morning, Romania’s proposal was accepted at the PACE Bureau, after difficult debates – said Senator Titus Corlăţean, who heads the Romanian delegation to Strasbourg and is now also one of PACE vice-presidents.
Titus Corlăţean: I hope we have a proper debate that will lead the Ukrainian authorities to correct this law, to accept the Venice Commission's expertise on this law and to modify a law that drastically limits the rights and protection of national minorities in Ukraine, including the Romanian one.
The debate is to take place on Thursday.
