After analysing all the documents sent at the end of last year, Sighişoara was selected for the final stage of the “Europe Prize” competition, the highest distinction awarded by the Council of Europe in the parliamentary session which is annually held between 11-15 April in Strasbourg.
The decision on the winner of the “Europe Prize” for 2011 was made after the members of the Environment, Agriculture and Local and Regional Affairs watched the films presenting the finalist cities, which were: Sighişoara in Romania, Landerneau in France, Hunfeld in Germany, Corciano in Italy and Poznan in Poland.
After the applications of the five finalists were checked by a jury, Sighişoara was placed second, who won two votes, as well as the cities Landerneau and Hunfeld.
Although the film presenting Sighişoara won the same number of votes as the cities awarded first place, the latters resorted to a backstage trick and decided to run in tandem, which helped them to get a better result, without literally observing the regulations, as considered by the senator Petru Başa who went to Strasbourg to offer support for Sighişoara.
With regards to the other finalists, Corciano in Italy got a vote while Poznan in Poland did not receive any vote.
Sighişoara is winner of the European Diploma in 1995, of the Flag of Honour in 1998 and of the Plaque of Honour in 2003, distinctions awarder by the Council of Europe as a sign of appreciation for the activity carried out by the community in Sighişoara in the spirit of the ideas of Europeanism.
