Artists from over ten countries will be performing until May 6 at the Marin Sorescu National Theater in Craiova, at the Shakespeare International Festival that started on 23 April.
Festival takes place under the headline The Shakespeare Planet. Some of the productions in the Festival will also be presented in International Shakespeare Festival.
Show to mark the Festival is "The African Tales of Shakespeare", presented by the New Theater in Warsaw and directed by Krzysztof Warlikowski. Closing show will be Robert Lepage’s “Needles and Opium.” The performance is presented outside of the Shakespeare program by Quebec-based company Ex Machina.
More than 30 shows from around the world complete the agenda of this prestigious event. Robert Lepage, Declan Donnellan, Kelly Hunter and Irina Brook are famous directors that have been invited.
Program includes performances of companies coming from the UK, South Korea, South Africa, Belgium, France, Japan, Australia, Brazil, U.S. and Romania.
Director of the Festival, Emil Boroghină: At this moment, the Shakespeare Festival is Craiova's cultural brand and we are glad when the name of our city is associated with the Shakespeare International Festival and vice versa. And because of its title - Planet Shakespeare - we wanted to have performances from all around the world. We have some shows from Europe, two from Asia, two from North America and one each from Australia, Africa and South America.
RRA Reporter: This year, the Shakespeare International Prize awarded by a jury chaired by the famous theatrologist George Banuş and offered by the Romanian Cultural Institute will be granted to Director Krzysztof Warlikowski.
