Speaker of the Romanian Chamber of Deputies and national leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), Liviu Dragnea, is currently investigated by the National Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA) over charges related to abuse of office, EU funds fraud, tax evasion and forming an "organized criminal group" while he was the Chairmen of the Teleorman County Council.
Prosecutors argue that the criminal group, initiated in 2001 and suspected as still operating, has been made of civil servants and business people, with the main purpose to fraudulently obtain large amounts of money out of publicly funded contracts.
The damage estimated so far by investigators amounts to tens of millions of lei.
Another eight people are prosecuted in this case, which was based on a notice sent by the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) in 2016.
