Romfilatelia, the institution designed to issue Romanian postage stamps, in partnership with the United States Embassy in Bucharest, has organized, on 10 May, a philatelic event dedicated to Martin Luther King Jr., at the National Library of Romania.
A new postal stamp is to be issued to honor Martin Luther King Jr.'s personality and ideas. It will have Martin Luther King Jr.'s image and his words "The most urgent and important question of life is - What are you doing for others?"
Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist pastor, political activist and US civil rights fighter.
He organized and fought for the right to vote, racial desegregation and other basic civic rights for black citizens.
Most such laws, namely those on civil rights and the right to vote, were promulgated during the Presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson. In a march for freedom (August 28, 1963), he pronounced one of the most famous speeches: “I have a dream”.
Martin Luther King Jr. was the youngest Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1964 to fight racial segregation and racial discrimination.
He was also very active in the fight against poverty as well as for stopping the Vietnam War.
King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee.
After his death, he was awarded the Presidential Medal for Freedom in 1977 and the Golden Medal in 2004.
In 1986, Martin Luther King Jr.'s Day was declared a federal holiday in the United States.
