Romanian Senate approves Referendum on family definition in Constitution

Romanian Senate adopted, on Tuesday, in plenary session, the legislative proposal on organizing a referendum to decide family definition in the Constitution. Referendum is to take place on October 7.
According to the proposed amendment to Article 48 of the Romanian Constitution: 'The family is based on the freely consented marriage between a man and a woman, their equality and the right and duty of parents to ensure the raising, education and training of children'.
Citizens' initiative needed support from at least two-thirds of senators’ support. Legislative proposal was passed with 107 votes in favor to 13 against and seven abstentions.
