Romania is far behind the other EU Member States in terms of patients' access to medical treatments, innovation and quality medical services.
European Health Coalition, which includes patient associations and pharmaceutical industry representatives, has launched a campaign, on Thursday, to draw attention to this.
Dan Zaharescu, Executive Director of the Romanian Association of International Medicines Manufacturers (ARPIM): The right to healthcare is guaranteed by the Constitution. Romanian patients are European patients. They have the right to medical services at the same level as other European patients. Each patient should benefit from the medical drug he or she needs, when she or he needs it. The budget allocated to treatments must reflect the needs of all Romanian patients, and many of the diseases can be prevented and, implicitly, many of the deaths can be avoided. Each patient should have the chance of an early diagnosis.
According to a study by the Health Coalition, almost half of the Romanian citizens believe that the main problems faced by Romanian patients with chronic illnesses are low-quality medical services and under-financing of the medical system in Romania.
