Current situation of African swine fever outbreaks has been discussed on Tuesday in the Romanian Government. Informal meeting has been attended by several Cabinet members, Head of the Emergency Situations Department, Raed Arafat, and representatives of the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA).
RRA Reporter Petruţa Obrejan:
"Since July 2017, Romania has been facing a very serious cross-border disease, namely African swine fever, which is very difficult to eradicate and involves great financial and personnel efforts. Although authorities intervened and applied the measures set out in the Romanian contingency plan, outbreaks have spread at the beginning of this year, especially in the northwest and in the south-east, including the Danube Delta. Moreover, National Sanitary Veterinary Authority confirmed, a few days ago, identification of 440 outbreaks of African swine fever, out of which 99% were in households and two in commercial farms. This alarming situation led the Executive to take additional measures, but also to analyze results with more members of the Cabinet. Farmers received assurances in reference to compensations for their losses. According to ANSVSA, amount allocated for damages is 130,000 lei".
