Romanian Chief of Defense at the EU Military Committee

Romania's Chief of Defense, General Nicolae-Ionel Ciucă, has attended the meeting in Brussels of the European Union Military Committee (Heads of Defense).
EUMC Agenda included topics related to EU-NATO cooperation, state of implementation of the joint set of proposals for cooperation, and NATO and EU perspective on Military Mobility, Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) and post-test report on Coordinated Annual Review on Defense (CARD).
General Nicolae Ciucă has highlighted the importance of EU-NATO cooperation in all formats, expressing support for the Parallel and Coordinated Exercises (PACE) and inclusion of hybrid scenarios in NATO and EU exercises. "During NATO exercise CMX 19 held from 9 to 15 May, Romania, which currently holds the EU Council Presidency, has activated the Integrated Political Crisis Response (IPCR), which supports facilitation of NATO-EU cooperation on the political-military level through integrated approach of crises", General Ciucă mentioned, according to a press release from the Defense Staff.
Romanian high-level military official also supported the necessity and importance of "increasing military mobility, with an emphasis on identifying operational requirements and needs in this field. Involving issues that go beyond defense, projects related to military mobility also require involvement of other authorities able to support this process at national level".
In the session dedicated to EU operations and missions, Romania’s Chief of Defense highlighted the importance of commitments in the Western Balkans, with an emphasis on the ALTHEA Executive Task Force to address existing threats. Romania participates in Operation ALTHEA with Defense Staff and troops for the Intermediate Reserve of the operation.
In the capabilities session, Romania’s Chief of Defense appreciated the importance of CARD, PESCO, EDF initiatives and highlighted involvement of Romanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union in organization of CARD workshop in Bucharest in the spring of 2019.
