The joint production of the Piranha 5 armored vehicle, together with General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS), will be an exceptional stimulus for the relaunching and upgrading of the production, but also for the skills improvement of the “Uzina Mecanica” Bucharest (UMB) employees - said the Romanian Minister for Economy, Gheorghe Şimon.
"The documents signed with General Dynamics set out the guidelines for a Romanian –American Sustainable Strastegic Partnership, for the benefit of the national defense industry and the endowment objectives of the Romanian Army.
The joint production of the Piranha 5 armored vehicle will be an exceptional momentum both for the relaunching and upgrading of the production, as well as for the training and improvement of the ‘Uzina Mecanica’ Bucharest employees",Gheorghe Şimon added.
The agreements between the signatory parties will take place in two phases.
In the first phase, UMB will subcontract from GDELS the assembly and local manufacture for the components of Piranha 5.
The first armored vehicle order – out of a total of 227 conveyors - will be delivered under this form of cooperation.
General Dynamics will also ensure the refurbishment of the production hall, the preparation and integration of the UMB assembly line.
In the second phase, GDELS will form a Romanian limited liability company (GDELS ROM SRL) that will initiate the formation of a Romanian joint venture, together with UMB.
This joint venture will execute the second order, as the main contractor, if the Romanian legislation and regulations allow it.
