Romania is in the best position to support the transatlantic relationship, President Klaus Iohannis said on Wednesday in Bucharest at the Annual Meeting of the Romanian Diplomacy, and urged Romanian diplomats to support this imperative.
"Romania, the ally and strong strategic partner of the US, but also EU Member State, deeply committed to the European project, is perhaps best placed to support the transatlantic link.
It is the duty of each of us to firmly support this imperative (…)
The risks, threats and challenges I talked about last year unfortunately still exist, from the challenges and threats in the East, to the risks that have their source in the southern neighborhood, including terrorism, migration and the regional crises that take too long to be settled.
All of these call for your active, responsible and innovative involvement as top representatives of the Romanian diplomacy.
Although there are reasons for optimism, given that extremism and populism have suffered a number of electoral defeats, the same involvement is still needed in reference to the internal challenges of the European Union.
I am particularly referring to the process linked to the UK withdrawal from the EU and to the re-launch of the European project on which our own future depends, also the future of the generations to come.
Therefore, you have the duty to act more vigorously and efficiently to counter these risks, threats and challenges, to find lasting solutions so that Romania's national goals are achieved and Romanians are well protected.
At the same time, as diplomats, it is important that you have a special privilege, which must be preserved at all costs, the position of a politically stable Romania, with a significant economic growth, which continues, although with small interruptions, the consolidation of the rule of law.
If keeping these assets is mostly the political responsibility of the Government and the majority coalition, maintaining predictability in Romania's foreign and security policy, as a state it can be counted on, is your responsibility.
I am convinced that each and every member of the Romanian Diplomatic and Consular Corps is fully aware of this imperative”.
