Romania ranks last in the European Union in terms of research spending, according to data released by Eurostat.
EU states spent around € 311 billion on research and development last year, equivalent to 2.3% of Gross Domestic Product. Romania allocated only 0.47 percent, half of its Bulgarian neighbors. In first place in this ranking are Belgium and Sweden.
Eurostat also points out that the business sector has continued to be the main area in which research and development funding is spent. It accounts for 66% of total spending, followed by higher education, government and the private sector.
