Romania was elected on Thursday, June 15, a member of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), as a representative of the Eastern European Group, during elections that took place in the 71st UN General Assembly session, with 172 votes, announces a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The election of Romania for this new mandate which will be exercised in New York in 2018 - 2019 represents "a direct consequence of our country's sustained involvement in most of the UN's activities, and also confirms the appreciation our country enjoys internationally, as well as a consolidated system of bilateral and multilateral relations”, the document states.
According to the Foreign Ministry, Romania will support, as a member, the role of ECOSOC as a forum for dialogue and policy recommendations, a balanced integration of sustainable development to respond to emerging challenges, and an accountability platform referring to global commitments, to monitor and report progresses.
The UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is the third major organ in the UN system, in terms of importance. It has 54 Member States elected in the UN General Assembly for three-year terms.
ECOSOC provides clear, coherent and harmonized guidelines on economic, social and environmental policies.
