Cases of fraud and financial irregularities with European funds reported in 2018 from across the European Union refer to over 580 million euros, out of which about 320 million were recovered, indicates data presented in the annual report of the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF).

Romania is in the top of the EU Member States in terms of number of reports signaling fraudulent irregularities, after Italy.

Romania has the most complaints to OLAF- 477 cases over the past five years, and ranks second, after Poland, in terms of the amount of fraud reported. Romania has reported frauds of over 62 million euros, followed by France (3rd place) with almost 29 million and Bulgaria (4th place) with 25 million euros.

Only last year, Romania reported the highest fraud in agriculture, same as Italy. Bucharest is also in on an undesirable first place in reference to forged documents, which is the main method of fraud of European funds.

As for the amounts recovered last year, Germany ranks first, with 85 million euros, followed by France - 84 million.

OLAF analysis shows that the procedures for recovering damages are usually extended on a period of several years due to complex legal and administrative procedures or due to large financial impact.
