Last year, bread prices in Romania were the lowest in the European Union, being almost half the EU average, according to data released on Friday by the European Statistical Office (Eurostat).
According to these data, the price of bread and cereals was highest in Denmark, 53% above the EU level, followed by Austria, 35% above the EU level, Luxembourg, Sweden and Finland, all 27% above the EU level.
In contrast, the lowest prices for bread and cereals in 2020 were recorded in Romania, with 44% below the EU level, followed by Bulgaria, 33% below the EU level, and Poland, with 30% below the EU level.
Eurostat data also show that bread prices in Romania are lower than in other Balkan countries that are not members of the European Union, such as Northern Macedonia, Albania, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Practically, Romania has the lowest bread prices in all the 37 states analyzed by Eurostat, except for Turkey (49% below the EU level), informs Agerpres.
