Over the last two decades, Romania has made remarkable progress in preserving in the collective memory the lessons of the past and in combating anti-Semitism, racism, xenophobia and hatred, President Klaus Iohannis said in a message delivered on the occasion of the 83rd anniversary of the Iasi Pogrom.
The head of state also emphasized that education remains the most effective tool to thwart attempts to deny the history of the Holocaust and discourage possible acts motivated by hatred.
The President also mentioned the current complicated international context, where toxic, anti-Semitic, racist and hateful influences are once again trying to pervert humanity. In his view, these attempts can be repelled by firmly sanctioning all deviations and promoting respect for international humanitarian law.
