Romanian citizens over 18 years of age are called to vote, on 6-7 October, in the family definition referendum, which aims to change Article 48 of the Constitution stating that “family is founded on a freely consented marriage between spouses” into “family is founded on a freely consented marriage between a man and a woman”.
Initiative to revise the Constitution belongs to the Coalition for Family that advocates for traditional family values, and has managed to gather three million signatures to support its initiative, with a large support from the Romanian Orthodox Church.
Amendment proposed for article 48 of the Romanian Constitution (Family) states: "The family is founded on the freely consented marriage between a man and a woman, their full equality, as well as the right and duty of the parents to ensure the upbringing, education and instruction of their children."
There will be 18,662 polling stations across Romania, out of which 1,264 in Bucharest. Romanians from abroad will vote at 378 polling stations: 192 at the diplomatic missions, consular offices and cultural institutes, and 186 in other locations. Most polling stations will be in Italy (58), Spain (48), Republic of Moldova (35), US (32), UK (19), France (15) and Germany (14). Polling stations open at 07:00hrs, EEST, on every referendum day and close at 21:00hrs, according to Agerpres.
