Romanian National Radiophonic Theater has won, with Heruvim's Dream directed by Mihnea Chelaru, the second prize at the "60 Second Radio" 2018 international competition in Montreal, Canada.
"60 Second Radio" 2018 international contest has been dedicated to one-minute radiophonic creations. Launched on February 13 on UNESCO’s World Radio Day, the 2018 edition of the contest brought together 148 radio productions from 25 countries across five continents (America, Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa). A record participation that made it very difficult for the seven members of the jury, who deliberated for five hours following numerous individual and group listening sessions.
Jury was made up of festival directors, radio producers and directors from Canada and France. Boris Chassagne, director of the "60 Second Radio"contest, appreciated the immense creativity resource the participants demonstrated and highlighted the ability of these radio productions to reflect sensitive topics of the today world.
Winners of the "60 Second Radio" 2018 International contest:
First Prize - Time Colored Face - Bernard Clarke (Ireland).
Second Prize - Heruvim's Dream - Mihnea Chelaru (Romania).
Third prize - payPhone - Darryl Lucas (UK).
A special mention was given to Buttermilk - Antje Vowinckel (Germany).
Mihnea Chelaru, the multi-awarded director of Radio Romania's Radiophonic Theater Department, is the author of the entire production of Heruvim's Dream. He signs both the screenplay and the artistic direction of this one-minute creation that talks about violence and human relation to it. The child immersed in the play of soldiers leads us into the vision of the tragedy of the contemporary wars.
Victims are children raised with the ideal of war manhood. Mother's call prefigures the mourning of all the women who lose their son in the wars today. Jury of the contest commented on the many meanings of this sound creation: from how we are built up by our education and values we are taught during childhood, to how the sound of virtual games trivializes the horror of the war.
"Heruvim, between play, dream and reality, precursor, diviner or amputated childhood? A textured narrative work, cleverly curled up"(Boris Chassagne, director of the "60 Second Radio" contest)
Mihnea Chelaru shares the podium with Bernard Clarke, Darryl Lukas and Antje Vowinckel, creators from prestigious European radio schools (Ireland, Great Britain and Germany), confirming with a new award the quality of Radio Romania's Radiophonic Theater.
