A leading member of the governing Social Democratic Party (PSD) was appointed as judge with Romania's Constitutional Court on Tuesday.
Valer Dorneanu gained the support of deputies of the governing Social Liberal Union (USL) and representatives of the country's minorities.
The results of a secret vote in the Romanian lower house showed that Mr. Dorneanu received 279 votes against 59.
The newly appointed judge said he would make every effort in order to ensure the court's growing credibility and prestige, RADIO ROMANIA reported.
Vlad Nicolae Popa, a candidate of the opposition Democratic Liberal Party (PD-L), lost the race for job.
PD-L MP Mircea Toader claimed that the vote was politically motivated and he criticised Mr. Dorneanu for his past as Romania's Ombudsman in 2012.
But house speaker Valeriu Zgonea denied the allegations and said that "justice was made".
