Romania’s Prosecutor General Augustin Lazăr has sent President Klaus Iohannis the request to get a green light and start criminal prosecution of former President Ion Iliescu, former Prime Minister Petre Roman and former Deputy Prime Minister Gelu Voican Voiculescu, for crimes against humanity in the “Revolution of 1989” file. Romanian Presidential Administration confirmed it received the Prosecutor General’s request.
According to the Office of Prosecutor General Augustin Lazăr, the request is based on constitutional and legal provisions in the matter.
Former Prime Minister Petre Roman reacted first, saying he was outraged by this request and rejecting any involvement in the Revolution file.
Petre Roman stated that he was, in fact, the target of the shootings at that time.
"Revolution of 1989" file is one of the longest investigations in the history of judicial practice in Romania.
Prosecutors have had to clarify the circumstances in which hundreds of people died and several thousand were injured at the time, according to RADOR.
