The law concerning elections in one round has been passed by President Traian Băsescu.
The Head of State stated for Radio Romania that all the political parties asked that this bill be passed.
"I have passed the law regarding one-round elections for city hall; I must admit I had my doubts, but all the parties have asked me to".
"In the end, it’s their problem, including the Social Liberal Union requested the new election law in their otherwise comic proposal, which included snap elections".
According to the new law, mayors will be elected in the first round, except for ties.
The bill has been adopted by the Chamber of Deputies; the Senate initially rejected it.
Several politicians, including Liberal Democrat Party representatives and a series of NGOs, asked the President not to pass the bill.
On Wednesday, President Traian Băsescu signed the decree concerning the ratification of the agreement between Romania and Moldova, which was signed last year in Bucharest.
