A greater involvement of NATO in the Middle East would be appropriate in terms of security, but also of reconstruction, of which Romania is interested, President Klaus Iohannis said in a press conference at Bucharest’s Cotroceni Palace.
RRA Reporter Carmen Gavrilă: President Klaus Iohannis said that although geographically distanced, the recent tensions in the Middle East are relevant for the security of Europe, too, not only for the actors directly involved. However, said Klaus Iohannis, Romania and its interests have not been directly affected by the recent developments, neither the Romanian troops deployed in the region.
Head of State said that in situations like this, Romania is constantly coordinating with partners from the European Union and NATO, especially with the USA, and that Romania supports the integrity, unity and sovereignty of Iraq.
Klaus Iohannis also welcomed the recent call by US President Donald Trump on a greater NATO involvement in the Middle East. Counter-terrorism should continue, said President Iohannis, urging for calm, dialogue and respect of commitments".
