President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, is to receive the Charlemagne Prize next year, awarded each year to personalities who stand out in promoting European values.
In the press conference at which this decision was announced, Speaker of the board of directors of the Charlemagne Prize, Jurgen Linden, said that this distinction is meant to encourage Klaus Iohannis to continue to lead his country on the European path.
According to France Presse, the award-winning Foundation has stated that President Klaus Iohannis is a defender of freedom and democracy, minorities and cultural diversity.
In 2019, Charlemagne Award was awarded to UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, and in 2018 it was awarded to French President Emmanuel Macron.
Charlemagne Prize is awarded annually since 1950 by City of Aachen (Germany) to personalities who contribute to European unity or to cooperation between European countries. However, for ten times during the 60s and 70s the prize was not awarded, in the absence of a sufficiently deserving candidate.
