Crin Antonescu and Victor Ponta, the leaders of the two parties, have chosen to announce at Iaşi, on the January 24 that they are more determined than ever to forge a political opposition alliance to develop into an alternative to the actual power.
Crin Antonescu, the PNL leader, declared that the liberals are determined to start developing a political alliance with PSD in order to offer the Romanians the chance to have a normal country again.
The liberal leader is convinced that it is the duty of the opposition parties to offer an alternative to the actual party in power.
The newly formed party will be submitted to the vote of the management forums of the two parties on February 5 and the principle on which the new alliance will be built is that of parity.
"This alliance is not one of juncture but a juridical one and it will have major objectives at least until 2016" Crin Antonescu explained.
He added that he has the consent of the members of the party to start this project.
"In the last few weeks I have taken counsel with the National Liberal Party, with its organizations, its foremost people, its members of Parliament.
The idea that the National Liberal Party, which has tried throughout his history to serve the national interest and the public good, has to make this step today has been considerably supported", Crin Antonescu said.
The objectives of the new alliance, on a medium- and long-term
Victor Ponta, the social democrat leader, stated that the objectives of the new alliance will be established on a medium- and long-term and they will refer to the proper functionality of the state institutions.
He announced that on February 5 the National Council will gather to vote the forming of a new alliance.
The PSD leader specified that he will suggest to the National Council the forming of a new political platform legally registered.
"I will suggest that this alliance be on a medium- or even long-term, have essential national objectives related to democracy, the functionality of the state institutions but as well to people’s future expectations, stop the anti-social and anti-national measures of the actual government, restore the balance and give people their money which the actual power has stolen back", Victor Ponta declared.
The PSD president also added that he is aware of the ideological differences between the two parties, but he is convinced that the political platforms of the PSD and PNL will not emulate each other, but complete each other so that the new alliance shall be a viable alternative to the actual government.
