Two of the country's biggest retailers, a hypermarket chain and a DIY chain, inaugurated the installation of photovoltaic panels on the roofs of 28 large stores in 13 cities. The systems will be able to cover up to 30% of the energy needed to operate.
Present at the inauguration, environment minister Mircea Fechet said that such measures would mean lower electricity bills and cleaner air: "We plan to put photovoltaic panels on all roofs in Romania - I am talking about people's houses - but as environment minister I can only appreciate such private investments. This also means a lower bill for the shop in question, but ultimately it also means cleaner air which we all breathe. I would also say that, between having photovoltaic panels on arable land, on agricultural land, I believe that we must first exhaust all these roof areas, and when we have finished, if we need more areas, we should look for other places.
