Orthodox Christians as well as Greek-Catholics celebrate Saint Stephen today, the first Christian martyr.
He was contemporary with the apostles of Jesus Christ and was one of the seven deacons chosen to serve in the first Christian community in Jerusalem.
Stephen was accused of blasphemy by the Jewish clergy and was stoned to death. The New Testament recorded his last words asking God to forgive his murderers.
In Romania, over 500.000 people celebrate their name day.
