PNL leader Nicolae Ciuca is now officially the Liberal candidate for the presidential elections. The candidacy was unanimously voted on Sunday by delegates attending the party's National Council, held at the Palace of Parliament in Bucharest. There were no votes against and no abstentions.
Nicolae Ciuca emphasized that the National Liberal Party wants a right-wing governing coalition.
Nicolae Ciuca: I say it clearly, we want to form a coalition with right-wing parties. This has always been our first option and it will continue to be. This is also the option that the majority of Romanians express at the polls. Right-wing forces must stand in these elections alongside the National Liberal Party, because the National Liberal Party is the strongest party of the Right, the party that has the capacity to win this battle.
The independent mayor of the capital, Nicusor Dan, also wants a right-wing government and gave a short speech from the rostrum of the PNL National Council meeting.
He has signed for Nicolae Ciuca's candidacy, while USR leader Elena Lasconi says that the mayor of Bucharest has also signed for her. However, Nicusor Dan did not say he would support any of the candidates, but said he is a man of the right.
