Thousands of people went out again on the streets, on Sunday, November 26, in Bucharest and other cities in Romania, to protest against the planned changes in the Tax and Justice laws. Demonstrators said that the changes, proposed by the ruling Social Democrats, would place the system under political control, would allow high-level corruption remain unpunished and would undermine anti-corruption efforts.
„All for justice!”, „Thieves!”, „We want justice, not corruption!” – protesters shouted.
One of the planned changes to the current Judiciary System is to prevent Romania’s President from blocking the appointment of key judges. President Klaus Iohannis stated he would use constitutional means to oppose the plan.
Demonstrators also oppose a law that will transfer social security taxes from the employer to the employee’s responsibility. Romanian Goverment says this measure will boost revenues.
Sunday's protest was the biggest of all anti-corruption rallies since the beginning of the year. Protesters in Bucharest, but also in Cluj, Timisoara, Iasi, Brasov, Sibiu, Galati, Pitesti and Constanta, expressed their anger at the left-wing government, calling the ruling Social Democratic Party “the red plague”.
