RADIO ROMANIA NEWS - A national public alarm exercise took place today in the context of the border war. Citizens of Mehedinti say they felt fear during the action.
A correspondence by Mihai Badescu: "Although today the sirens emitted messages announcing a natural disaster in the context of the border war, citizens say they have fears and believe that these exercises are necessary.
-: I know that these exercises have been carried out by the local defence for several years. We used to work in this area and we were called in to help keep the alarm circuits working. I know that they are organised to check them if necessary so that they can work. I welcome them and hopefully they won't be needed in real cases.
Reporter: Are you afraid of a conflict, given the tension?
-: I am afraid and I hope it will never come to that. I don't think it will come to that because nobody will benefit from it.
Reporter: The authorities are monitoring the proper functioning of the sirens, but they say the public also needs to become familiar with the sounds transmitted through them.
Ramona Nistor spokeswoman: "The public alarm exercise known generically as "Alarm Wednesday" was carried out to check the operation of sirens throughout the country. A natural disaster was simulated and a disaster alarm was issued. It consists of five 16-second sounds with a 10-second pause between them." "
