Today marks 72 years since the massacre at the White Fountain, where were executed about three thousand Romanian by Soviet forces in a single night.
Also today, people from Bucovina cross the border every year and light candles in memory of Romanians from Northern Bucovina, who, frightened by the Soviet occupation and the NKVD executions and deportations, wanted to cross the border, into the kingdom. The subject was not discussed until the '90s.
Through the law adopted by the Romanian Parliament, today is National Day in memory of Romanian victims of the massacre at the White Fountain and other areas of deportations, of hunger and other forms of organized repression of Soviet totalitarian system in Herţa region, Northern Bukovina and whole Bassarabia.
