RADIO ROMANIA NEWS (December 24) - More and more fugitive convicts are being brought into the country. One of them, who was transferred this week from Belgium, is serving a prison sentence for high-risk drug trafficking. Another, from Bosnia-Herzegovina, is convicted for migrant trafficking, and another from Greece, for qualified theft. According to the Minister of Justice, Alina Gorghiu, with the operationalization of the register of drug traffickers, there will be an additional tool for monitoring these people. She stated to TVR Info that in 2023 the judicial authorities managed to recover, on average, two fugitive convicts per day, and the collaboration with the member states of the Union in the field is getting better.
Alina Gorghiu: This year, we brought over 1.700 or so fugitives in the classical sense and about 300 people who committed crimes outside the country and come to serve their sentence in the Romanian penitentiary system. Sure, it makes the media happy to talk about big names, but I'm telling you that they are criminals who have been sentenced to prison, who have committed great atrocities and misfortunes and have had very large sentences, with convictions, and after years we succeed in bringing them back to the country. Italy has handed over a lot of fugitives to us lately. We no longer have many debates on these situations. By the way, I thank the partners and the state and authorities in Germany. It is one of the states that hand over convicted people to us without any problem, after we communicate the situation of the penitentiaries.
