Mircea Geoana, an independent candidate in Romania's presidential elections, proposes to introduce voting at 16 in Romania. Currently the minimum voting age in Romania is 18.
Mircea Geoana: We want to lower the voting age to 16. It's happening all over Europe. In Malta they did it, in Greece they did it. Some are 16, some are 17, depending on the type of elections, but I think young men and women today are more mature quickly. They know what they want and I think that would be very good. In the last election, young people aged 18 and a bit older voted more, percentage wise, than those aged 25 and over.
A bill has been introduced in Parliament in 2022 to lower the voting age to 16. Adopted in the Senate, the document is now being debated by the specialized committees of the Chamber of Deputies, the decision-making body.
