Romanian Government adopted, on Friday, Memorandum of the Ministry of Justice proposing abolition of the Section for Investigation of Criminal Offences in the Judiciary (SIIJ).
Minister of Justice Cătălin Predoiu explained that establishment of this section was done without public consultation, against the backdrop of negative reactions from many associations of magistrates, but also from European partners, such as GRECO and the Venice Commission. In addition, the normative acts adopted are said to contain mistakes that made this section unable to work, said Cătălin Predoiu.
Interim PSD President Marcel Ciolacu considers outrageous even discussing abolition of the Special Section, in the context in which, he says, abuses in the justice system occur on a daily basis. Ciolacu suggests a debate in Parliament on this subject and consultations with all magistrates' associations and interested institutions, in order to have an independent and fair Justice.
