Yesterday, Europe Day was marked in Bucharest and in several cities in the country.
May 9 has, in fact, a threefold significance: the State Independence Day proclaimed in 1877, the Victory Day of the United Nations Coalition in World War II, but also Europe Day.
A series of events took place in the capital, organized in the King Mihai 1 Park, formerly Herastrau, and at the Military Academy, attended by high state dignitaries.
Senate President Anca Dragu said the European Union means, among other things, common values, the protection of human rights, the rule of law and a strong civil society.
Anca Dragu pointed out that, starting now, we must build the future of the European Union.
Anca Dragu: Today we start thinking about the future of Europe, how we can make Europe better, make it better to live in it and, most importantly, how to make European citizens part of the European project.
Reporter: The President of the Chamber of Deputies, Ludovic Orban, underlined that the EU is facing a series of changes and challenges, and the European institutions, together with the European citizens, will be able to manage them as they should now. Ludovic Orban campaigned for the further enlargement of the European Union.
Ludovic Orban: We must not stop the extension of the European Union. There are countries that are probably not ready to join the Union, but which have this intention and which have taken steps towards integration, and we need to be open to the process of enlarging the European Union.
Reporter: Yesterday morning, also in Bucharest, a religious and military ceremony took place at the Monument of the Heroes of the Fatherland at the Military Academy, to celebrate Europe Day, Romania's State Independence Day and the Victory Day of the United Nations coalition in the World War II.
