Romania has a serious chance to occupy an important position at European level, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said today.

He talked about the possibility of President Klaus Iohannis leaving Cotroceni earlier to become head of the European Council, after the possible resignation of the current incumbent Charles Michel.

The Prime Minister said that this is a real corridor and a chance not only for President Iohannis but also for Romania.

According to a scenario that has been circulating in recent days, Romania's president would have a serious chance of taking the top European job, as the leaders of the member countries would try to prevent the head of the Hungarian government, Viktor Orban, from taking the post.

If Klaus Iohannis were to leave Cotroceni before the end of his term, according to the constitution, the highest office in the state would be temporarily occupied by the head of the Senate, liberal leader Nicolae Ciuca.
