Laura Codruța Kövesi voted European Chief Prosecutor

Laura Codruța Kövesi, former Head of Romanian National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) has been voted, on Thursday, by the Council of the European Union, through its COREPER committee of ambassadors of EU Member States, as Chief of the newly-created EU Public Prosecutor’s Office – Digi24 TV, quoted by Rador, announces.
Kövesi was backed by 17 of the 22 Coreper members who voted at its meeting in Brussels on September 19. Having previously received the backing of the European Parliament, Kövesi’s appointment to the new role is now certain – reads Emerging Europe.
European Public Prosecutor’s Office will be an independent and decentralized prosecution office of the European Union, with the competence to investigate, prosecute and bring to judgment crimes against the EU budget, such as fraud, corruption or serious cross-border VAT fraud.
European Public Prosecutor’s Office is currently being set up, with the aim of becoming operational at the end of 2020. The European Public Prosecutor’s Office will have its seat in Luxembourg.
