Laura Codruţa Kövesi has been validated as European Chief Prosecutor by the Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament, which consists of leaders of the parliamentary groups and the President of the European Parliament.
This has been the last formal step in the nomination procedure and, as the European Parliament announced, Laura Codruţa Kövesi can start her seven-year term as Head of the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO).
EPPO, to be headquartered in Luxembourg, will be an independent EU body, responsible for investigating and prosecuting offenses against the EU's financial interests, such as corruption or cross-border VAT fraud of more than 10 million euros.
So far, only 22 EU Member States have joined EPPO. Sweden, Hungary, Poland, Ireland and Denmark – that currently do not participate – can join any time.
Laura Codruţa Kövesi is the first person to hold the position of European Chief Prosecutor, which she obtained despite the opposition expressed by the Romanian government, Rador informs.
