Former Prosecutor General of Romania, also former Chief Prosecutor of Romania’s National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA), Laura Codruţa Kövesi, has received, on Thursday, an important vote in favor of her appointment as European Chief Prosecutor. 17 of the 22 Ambassadors of EU Member States within EU Council’s COREPER voted in favor of Kövesi. Prior to that, European Parliament expressed support for Kövesi to become Head of the new European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO).
Her appointment will be finalized in following months after all formalities have been completed.
In Bucharest, Laura Codruţa Kövesi commented modestly and cautiously on the vote in Brussels, insisting that the procedure is not yet finalized and that the official decision must be awaited.
Laura Codruţa Kövesi:"It is a vote that has made me very happy, which, in my opinion, represents recognition of the activity of the justice system in recent years. It is a vote of all Romanians who have advocated for justice in recent years, have supported the fight against corruption, the rule of law and the European values, and I think it is an important day for Romania, for all Romanians, for the justice system and, last but not least, for me, as a prosecutor who just this week celebrated 24 years of my professional career".
