The decision by President Klaus Iohannis to withdraw his candidacy for NATO Secretary General is an example of his commitment to ensuring unity and consensus within the Alliance, the US Embassy in Bucharest emphasized today.
The Embassy appreciates Romania's contributions to the Alliance and President Iohannis' efforts to bring critical issues on the Alliance's Eastern Flank, including the Black Sea region, to the debate.
Recall that President Klaus Iohannis publicly announced in March his intention to run for the NATO chairmanship, but yesterday he said he was abandoning the idea.
However, NATO's secretary general is elected for a four-year term, from among senior political figures, through informal diplomatic consultations between member countries, not through a competitive process.
