Romania addressed the United States a request to purchase Patriot missile defense systems, President Klaus Iohannis said today at the Mihail Kogălniceanu airbase.

He explained that negotiations will start only after the US approval.

The Head of State has visited, today, the "Mihail Kogălniceanu" Administrative Center in Constanţa County, where one of the stages of the multinational exercise SABER GUARDIAN 17, the largest military exercise in the modern history of Romania, is currently taking place.

The acquisition of Patriot ground-to-air missiles is one of the eight priority army endowment programs, to be achieved from the two percent of the GDP allocated to Defense by 2026.

The cost of Patriot missiles, including technical support and equipment, is estimated at $ 3.9 billion.

President Klaus Iohannis RRA Envoy Oana Bâlă: President Klaus Iohannis is now at the Mihail Kogălniceanu Military Base, watching a flight exercise with MIG21 Lancer, F 16 and Eurofighter Typhoon.

At the arrival, the Head of State was greeted with a military ceremony, then had a meeting with General Petr Pavel, the President of the NATO Military Committee, who came to Romania to take part in the SABER GUARDIAN 2017 Multinational Exercise.

The President also met Romanian and British pilots participating in the strengthened air police mission in the southern area of NATO's Eastern flank to ensure its smooth running.
