The US Ambassador to Romania, Kathleen Kavalec, visited today the site of the future modular nuclear power plant in Doicesti, Dambovita county, broadcasts RADIO ROMANIA NEWS.
The project is being developed in collaboration between the Romanian state-owned company Nuclearelectrica and an American firm.
Kathleen Kavalec said that the technology used in the construction of the modular plant is safe and the project has the support of the US government.
The unit is expected to be operational in 2029, if feasibility and performance studies show that the chosen site, a former thermal power plant, remains the best option.
Energy minister Sebastian Burduja said he was optimistic that the project, the first of its kind in the world, would be implemented.
Sebastian Burduja: We want secure energy, we want energy at a fair price, we want clean energy. That means we must always have stable production. We can't give up coal, we can't give up gas, we can't give up nuclear power and expect that when we flip the switch the light bulb will come on. We have here, at Doicesti, one of the most important, traditional places in the national energy system, and we have seen how a plant that was based on burning coal is being transformed. Here, today, Romania has the chance to bring to mankind the first nuclear power plant based on small modular reactors. Where? Here, at Doicesti, in Romania.
Today, a photovoltaic panel park has been built on the site of the former Doicesti thermal power plant and is connected to the National Energy System.
